19th Century Victorian English Black Tole Coal Scuttle with Bird Plaque

About
This antique English coal scuttle dates to the late 19th century and exemplifies Victorian tole-ware craftsmanship. Constructed from black-painted metal, the bin features a sloped trapezoidal form with an operable hinged lid, accented by a finely cast brass panel depicting a bird among foliage, an elegant naturalist motif typical of the Aesthetic Movement. The decorative brass hinges and domed handle add warmth and contrast to the dark enamel finish, while a small ceramic knob allows for easy lid access. Inside, the bin retains its original fitted liner and side brackets for lifting, though expected signs of age and use are present, including little oxidation and wear to the interior base. The scuttle sits on four small raised feet, allowing for air circulation when placed near a hearth. Originally intended for storing coal or kindling, this charming piece now serves beautifully as a decorative accent or functional storage in a fireside setting or country house interior. A well-preserved example of English Victorian metalwork, this antique brings both utility and character to any space. Dimensions: 18.5ʺW × 10ʺD × 15ʺH
