20th Century Chinese Carved Jade Covered Vase with Pierced Handles
$750
About
Bring refinement and sculptural elegance to a console, étagère, or writing desk with this beautifully carved vintage Chinese covered vase, crafted circa 1940–1960 from soft celadon-green jade. The vessel is fashioned in a traditional baluster form, rising from a stepped rectangular foot and topped with a fitted lid carved from the same stone. The translucent jade displays natural variegation throughout, with cloudlike swirls of pale green, grey, and white that accentuate the piece’s organic beauty. Both sides of the vase feature raised low-relief decoration, stylized mythical creatures above a band of carved leaf motifs, executed with graceful lines and gentle modeling. The sculptural side handles are particularly notable: each is carved with openwork scrolls terminating in loose rings, all meticulously carved from a single block of jade, a hallmark of skilled craftsmanship. The interior is hollowed cleanly, allowing the piece to function as both an ornamental object and a symbolic covered urn in the Chinese tradition. This elegant antique-inspired vessel is in very good condition commensurate with age and use, with natural inclusions and subtle surface irregularities characteristic of hand-carved stone. An exquisite decorative accent, it brings serene tone, symmetry, and timeless Asian artistry to any interior. Dimensions: 5.5″ W x 2.25″ D x 8.5″ H.
