Early 19th Century French Louis XV Rococo Giltwood Console with Rouge Marble Top
$15,000
About
Place this elegant antique console table against a wall in an entry, hallway, or salon for a striking statement of early 19th century French craftsmanship. Crafted in France circa 1820, the demilune form features a richly carved giltwood base with exceptional openwork decoration. The apron is adorned with intricate Rococo-inspired scrolls, acanthus leaves, and floral garlands, all finely sculpted with deep relief and remarkable movement.
The console stands on cabriole legs joined by a shaped stretcher centered with a decorative trophy motif, composed of musical and pastoral attributes including a horn, sheaf of wheat, and a finely detailed hat, adding a romantic and allegorical touch. The carved elements retain a warm, timeworn gilt patina, highlighting the depth and artistry of the carving.
The top is dressed with a beautifully veined red marble surface, cut to conform to the serpentine front, and adding a rich contrast to the gilded base. The antique console is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
