Early 20th Century French Painted Faience Pheasant Sculpture Signed Louis Dage

$1,600

About

Decorate a ranch house, a hunting lodge or a man’s office with this elegant and colorful antique bird sculpture. Crafted in France circa 1930 and built of ceramic, the sculpture depicts a proud pheasant resting on an integral rectangular base. The hand painted game bird features a long tail and has its head turned to the side. The faience artwork is signed on the base by the artist Louis Auguste Dage. The sculpture is in excellent condition and adorns wonderful colors in the green and beige palette. Louis Auguste Dage (1885-1963) was born in Lille France. Louis Dage starts his career in the Fives-Lille earthenware factory. After a short stay in Saint-Aubin-en-Bray, he continues his training in Beauvais where Greber and Auguste Delaherche factories are located. Known as the painter on faience when registering the birth of his daughter in 1906, he was cited as the “decorator on faience”. In 1920, he found a ceramic factory with his friend Louis Fontinelle (1886-1964) in Anthony, near Paris. In 1922, Fontenelle and Dage no longer worked together. In 1924, Louis Dage won the famous « Meilleur ouvrier de France » award. Dage opened a pottery factory in 1930 where his daughter and brother worked as well. In 1935, he took over the factory of l’Adour. He died in Saint Sever in 1963. 21″W x 5″D x 13″H
