18th Century French Louis XV Carved Walnut Armoire Lyonnaise with Floral Motifs
$10,350
About
This important antique French armoire Lyonnaise, crafted in Lyon circa 1760, is a striking example of Louis XV provincial artistry, executed in richly grained solid walnut and standing over 8.5 feet tall.
The façade is defined by its elegant serpentine movement, with two molded doors carved in deep relief with asymmetrical floral and foliate motifs. Above, a boldly shaped bonnet is centered with a pierced cartouche of intertwined laurel branches, framed by finely carved scrolling ornament, a signature element of Lyonnais craftsmanship.
Raised on traditional escargot feet over a scalloped apron, the cabinet has a strong architectural presence while maintaining graceful proportions. The piece retains its original iron lock with large key and working crémaillère locking rod, an authentic and desirable feature rarely preserved.
The interior has been thoughtfully fitted with adjustable shelving and a central divider, allowing for versatile modern use, including storage or media concealment, while the red striped lining adds warmth and contrast.
A commanding and highly decorative 18th century armoire, ideal for anchoring a bedroom, entry, or living space with true French provincial character.
Excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with expected movement to the lower right door consistent with its 18th century construction and a rich, time-softened walnut patina throughout.
