19th Century French Louis XVI Carved Giltwood Mirror with Ribbon Bow Crest
$2,850
About
This elegant antique wall mirror captures the refined symmetry and decorative restraint of the Louis XVI style. Crafted in France circa 1870, the tall rectangular mirror features softly rounded upper corners and a slender hand-carved giltwood frame with a warm, time-softened gold surface.
The composition is crowned by an especially graceful carved ribbon bow crest, centered by a tightly knotted rosette and flanked by long, undulating ribbon tails extending across the top of the frame. The openwork carving gives the crest an airy sculptural quality while providing the unmistakable neoclassical vocabulary associated with Louis XVI interiors.
The mirror retains its original mercury glass, displaying the subtle depth and gentle imperfections prized in antique mirror plate. The reverse preserves its original horizontal wood-plank backing, while later wire hardware has been added for secure wall hanging.
With its generous 53.75-inch height and narrow proportions, the mirror has enough presence for an entry hall, bedroom, powder room, or above a console without overwhelming the surrounding furniture. The aged gilt finish shows attractive variation and surface wear that enhance its authentic 19th-century character.
Excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
