Pair of 19th Century Italian Baroque Giltwood Church Reliquary Mirrors
$1,875
About
Bring old-world ecclesiastical elegance to a mantel, console, or altar table with this remarkable pair of antique Italian reliquary mirrors. Crafted in Italy circa 1850, each tall hand-carved giltwood piece stands on a molded rectangular base and features a dramatic Baroque-inspired silhouette with scrolling acanthus leaves, shell motifs, floral carving, and deeply carved C-scroll decoration.
The upper section of each reliquary is fitted with a shaped original mercury glass mirror plate, framed by richly sculpted giltwood ornamentation. The surface retains a beautiful timeworn gold leaf finish, with traces of red bole and old polychrome visible beneath the gilding, creating wonderful depth, texture, and authenticity. The backs show the original hand-shaped wood construction and mirror supports, further emphasizing their age and craftsmanship.
Elegant and sculptural from every angle, this pair of 19th Century devotional carvings would make a striking statement on a mantel, buffet, console, or entry table. Both pieces are in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with expected wear, losses, and patina to the original gilded finish, giving them exceptional character and decorative presence.
