Mid-19th Century French Carved Walnut Prayer Bench or Prie-Dieu with Velvet
Place this elegant antique prayer chair in your bedroom for daily devotions. Crafted in France, circa 1870, the traditional kneeler stands on cabriole legs ending with scrolled feet over a scalloped apron with carved shell decor. The back features exquisite carvings decorated with acanthus leaf and shell motifs. The curved top and the large cushioned knee seat are upholstered with the original green velvet upholstery, and dressed with decorative brass nail heads. The tall religious “Prie-Dieu” (French for Praying God) is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a rich walnut patina; because of the seat height (16″), it could also be used as an occasional side chair. Measures: 18″ W x 20″ D x 32″ H.
