19th Century Italian Neoclassical Polychrome and Giltwood Torchère
$1,600
About
Bring dramatic scale and old world grandeur to an interior with this impressive antique torchère from Italy. Crafted circa 1860, the tall neoclassical floor candlestick rises over a substantial triangular plinth base resting on turned bun feet. The architectural base is richly decorated with carved scrolls, shell motifs, floral swags, and foliate ornaments in high relief, all highlighted with beautifully aged gilt accents against the original painted surface.
The elegant turned shaft features a series of tapered and baluster-form elements adorned with applied acanthus leaf mounts and neoclassical decoration, creating a striking vertical silhouette that draws the eye upward. The torchère is crowned with a carved capital supporting an iron candle plate and bobeche fitted with a wax candle.
This antique Italian floor candlestick retains its original polychrome and giltwood finish with desirable surface wear, layered patina, and rich character throughout. Sculptural and highly decorative, the piece would make a dramatic statement in a living room, entryway, library, or beside a fireplace. It could also be professionally wired as an exceptional floor lamp while preserving its architectural presence.
Excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
