Mid-Century Spanish Talavera Pottery Umbrella Stand with Alava Crest

About
Add color and regional character to an entryway with this charming antique-style ceramic umbrella stand crafted in Spain circa 1950. Hand-painted in the traditional Talavera manner, the cylindrical faience vessel is decorated with the coat of arms of Álava, the historic Basque province in northern Spain, surmounted by a crown and accented with the word “Justicia.” The body is further embellished with delicate floral sprays and geometric border motifs rendered in vibrant tones of cobalt blue, yellow, green, and rust over a creamy white glazed ground.
The tall pottery stand features a gently flared rim with hand-painted blue edging and showcases the subtle irregularities and brushwork associated with handcrafted Spanish ceramics. Both decorative and functional, the vessel is ideal for umbrellas, canes, walking sticks, or as a large floor vase in a Mediterranean, Spanish Colonial, or European-inspired interior.
Signed underneath “El Aifa Talavera,” the ceramic umbrella holder is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns rich hand-painted colors throughout.
