Pair of 19th C. Italian Neoclassical Hand-Painted Caned Armchairs with Portraits
$4,900
About
Crafted in Italy circa 1870, these refined neoclassical armchairs are made from solid cherry wood, valued for its warm tone and smooth grain. Each antique chair features a tall rectangular back with original caning, centered by an oval painted medallion depicting finely dressed 18th-century ladies in pastoral settings. The medallions are framed by radiating cane patterns, enhancing the artistry of the portraits.
The cherry wood frames are richly decorated with hand-painted floral garlands, scrolling acanthus motifs, and musical instruments along the crest rail, while the apron is embellished with polychrome floral sprays. Turned arm supports are accented with painted foliate details, and the chairs rest on tapered, fluted legs with painted embellishments at the knees. The caned seats include striped silk cushions, designed for comfort while protecting the original surface beneath.
Both chairs remain in good condition commensurate with age and use, with some staining on the cushions (serviceable but easily reupholstered to match any interior palette). The cane work is stable and intact, showing only gentle wear from age.
Measuring 24 inches wide by 23 inches deep and 39 inches high (seat height: 17 inches), this elegant pair embodies Italian neoclassical design, where cherry wood craftsmanship meets delicate painted decoration. Perfect for a salon, bedroom, or living area, they bring refinement, artistry, and historic charm into today’s interiors.
