Pair of 19th Century French HB Quimper Hand Painted Faience Tall Neck Vases
$1,800
About
Crafted in Quimper, France circa 1880, this elegant pair of antique faience vases showcases the refined artistry of HB Quimper. Each vase features a graceful tall neck rising from a bulbous body, flanked by scrolled handles and resting on a shaped pedestal base. The sculptural silhouette is both decorative and balanced, ideal for a mantel, console, or dining table centerpiece. Hand-painted in the traditional Breton style, the reserves depict charming scenes of peasants in regional dress. One vignette illustrates a seated woman at her spinning wheel beside a standing companion, while the other features two figures playing traditional instruments near a stone well. The vibrant palette of cobalt blue, soft green, golden yellow, and warm ochre is framed by intricate foliate scrollwork and floral garlands. The tall necks are decorated with delicate botanical motifs, enhancing the vertical elegance of the form. Both pieces are marked on the front Quimper and underside “HB Quimper” with model number 913, confirming their late 19th century production. The vases are in excellent antique condition commensurate with age and use, with rich glaze and crisp hand-painted detail throughout. Quimper pottery has been produced in Brittany since the late 17th century. The HB (Hubaudière-Bousquet) factory, founded in 1685, became one of the most prominent makers of tin-glazed faience, renowned for its Breton figures and floral decoration. Alongside Porquier and Henriot, HB helped establish Quimper as one of France’s most celebrated ceramic centers. Dimensions: 9″W x 7″D x 21.25″H
