Pair of 19th Century Swiss Black Forest Carved Walnut Hunt Trophy Sculptures
$14,000
About
This remarkable pair of wall trophies was hand carved in Switzerland’s Black Forest region circa 1870. Executed in richly grained walnut, and almost 3 feet tall, each plaque is a tour de force of traditional carving, showcasing the depth, detail, and lifelike quality for which Swiss Black Forest craftsmanship is renowned. Each large composition presents a full-bodied stag surrounded by finely sculpted game motifs including oak leaves, rifles, a hunting horn, and a powder pouch, all arranged in deep relief against a Rococo-shaped cartouche back-plate. The anatomical precision of the animals, along with the crisp detailing in the foliage and textures, imbues these works with striking realism and depth. In excellent condition commensurate with age, these antique Swiss hunting trophies are ideal for adorning a study, hunting lodge, library, or collector’s gallery. Sculptural and historically rich, they represent the finest in 19th-century Swiss decorative art and sporting tradition. 21”W x 35”H
