With their low profiles and bold rustic construction, this pair of antique chauffeuse chairs reflects the distinctive French modernist aesthetic associated with Charles Dudouyt. Crafted in Normandy, France circa 1920, each chair is constructed of walnut and beechwood and stands on substantial cylindrical legs joined by rounded stretchers.

The ladder backs feature two gently shaped horizontal slats framed by tall uprights terminating in carved bun-form finials. Each broad seat retains its original handwoven rush, bringing warmth and natural texture to the dark wood frames. The sculptural cylindrical supports, simplified geometric lines, and traditional country materials are characteristic of Dudouyt’s interpretation of French vernacular furniture; the pair is attributed to the designer.

Known in France as chauffeuses, these low chairs were traditionally positioned near a fireplace for warmth and relaxed seating. Their compact proportions also make them suitable as occasional chairs or distinctive children’s seating.

Both chairs are sturdy and in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with a rich walnut patina and well-preserved rush seats.
