Pair of Early 20th Century Italian Neoclassical Carved Giltwood Wall Sconces
$1,600
About
Crafted in Italy circa 1920, this impressive pair of tall wall sconces embodies the symmetry and refinement of the Louis XVI style. Each sconce features an elongated giltwood backplate topped with a carved ribbon-tied bow and cascading laurel leaves, torches, and musical instruments — classical emblems of triumph and the arts. The carved giltwood retains its original water gilding, now beautifully patinated to highlight the sculptural depth and craftsmanship. Five scrolling wrought-iron arms project from each sconce, ending in candle cups with scalloped drip pans. The arms are decorated with foliate scrolls and rosettes, creating an elegant interplay of curves and lightness. The pair remains unwired, giving flexibility to either electrify for modern use or display with wax tapers for an authentic period look. Measuring an impressive 44 inches in height, these dramatic appliques are ideal for flanking a mirror, doorway, or console table, adding verticality and a refined neoclassical presence to any setting. In very good condition commensurate with age and use, with a rich gilt surface and strong decorative appeal.
