Hand-carved in France circa 1880, this evocative oak figure depicts a solemn hooded monk cradling a bowl, likely a symbol of humility, almsgiving, or simple monastic life. Sculpted from solid oak with rich grain and deep patina, the figure wears a voluminous robe with deeply incised folds, its Gothic styling enhanced by the expressive carving of the face, furrowed brow, and contemplative gaze. Standing 15 inches tall on a shaped plinth base, this devotional sculpture embodies the rustic charm and spiritual austerity associated with cloistered monastic orders.
