19th C. French Hand Carved Oak Monk Figure in Gothic Style Robe Holding Bowl
$1,400
About
Hand-carved in France circa 1880, this evocative oak figure depicts a solemn hooded monk cradling a bowl, likely a symbol of humility, almsgiving, or simple monastic life. Sculpted from solid oak with rich grain and deep patina, the figure wears a voluminous robe with deeply incised folds, its Gothic styling enhanced by the expressive carving of the face, furrowed brow, and contemplative gaze. Standing 15 inches tall on a shaped plinth base, this devotional sculpture embodies the rustic charm and spiritual austerity associated with cloistered monastic orders. The back of the figure is equally well rendered, showing the flowing lines of the cloak. In excellent antique condition with minor age cracks and surface wear consistent with age, this figure would make a striking accent in a library, study, or alongside ecclesiastical decor. A fine example of late 19th-century French religious carving with enduring character and warmth.
