19th Century French Carved Walnut Paris Coat of Arms Wall Plaque

About
Decorate a study, library, office, or paneled hallway with this impressive antique French carved walnut wall plaque. Crafted in France circa 1870, the sculptural panel depicts the historic coat of arms of the City of Paris, centered with a sailing ship on waves beneath a field of fleur-de-lis and a carved city crown. The motto “Fluctuat Nec Mergitur”, meaning “She is tossed by the waves but does not sink,” is carved across flowing banners below.
The plaque is richly detailed throughout, with high-relief carving, oak and laurel branches, acorns, berries, scrollwork, architectural motifs, and bold heraldic decoration. The deep walnut patina highlights the craftsmanship and gives the piece wonderful depth, warmth, and old-world character. In excellent condition commensurate with age and use, this antique French blason would make a striking wall accent for a collector of Parisian history, heraldry, or carved architectural décor.
