19th C. French Black Forest Carved Oak Mirror with Bronze Trim and Bird Motif
$2,400
About
A striking example of French Black Forest craftsmanship, this intricately carved mirror was created circa 1870 and is made of stripped oak with a light, natural patina. The circular mirror from later addition is framed in finely cast bronze trim, offering an elegant contrast to the richly textured wood. The frame features an elaborate sculptural composition of oak leaves, flowers, and grape clusters, crowned at the top by a dramatic scene of a nesting bird defending against a snake, an allegorical motif symbolizing protection and vigilance. The lower section is adorned with deeply carved fruit and foliage, all rendered in exceptional detail. Measuring 16.5 inches wide by 4 inches deep and 30 inches high, this antique mirror is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use. A unique and decorative piece, ideal for a study, entryway, or nature-inspired interior.
