Mid-19th Century Italian Carved Walnut Cherub Compote or Tazza
$1,975
About
Carved in Italy circa 1870, this finely detailed 19th-century figural compote features a playful winged cherub supporting a wide, lobed basin above his head. Sculpted from solid walnut, the putto stands barefoot on a naturalistic circular base adorned with foliage, holding the bowl aloft with both raised arms in a classical gesture of offering. The top is shaped like an oversized flower or scalloped shell, carved with deep radiating veins and a central well that likely once held a decorative element or served as a shallow tazza or compote for fruit or sweets. The figure is richly modeled with expressive features, flowing curls, and a draped sash, all enhanced by a warm walnut patina and subtle hand-finished texture. Measuring 12.25 inches wide by 13 inches deep and 24.25 inches high, the piece remains in excellent antique condition with minor wear consistent with age and use. Both sculptural and functional, this Italian cherub figure makes a charming centerpiece, pedestal accent, or decorative objet in a classical or romantic interior.
