19th Century French Black Forest Carved Walnut Smoker’s Desk Set
$2,400
About
Decorate a desk, study or library with this elegant antique Black Forest smoker’s companion set. Crafted in France circa 1870, the finely carved walnut stand is executed in an elongated oval form and richly embellished with deeply carved foliage, vines and berry clusters in high relief across the perimeter and top, showcasing the naturalistic craftsmanship associated with the Black Forest tradition.
The fitted top is thoughtfully arranged with multiple functional elements. At the center, a hinged compartment opens to reveal divided interior storage, ideal for organizing pipes or tobacco. Flanking compartments with carved lids provide additional storage, including a mall box suitable for matches. A circular opening at the front is designed to hold an inkwell or removable insert, while the inset brass cup serves as an ash receiver or match holder.
Rising from the center, a turned and carved candlestick adds both verticality and ambiance, reinforcing the piece’s intended use in a refined smoking or writing environment. The ensemble is accompanied by a group of period pipes, enhancing both authenticity and presentation.
The antique desk accessory is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with a warm and rich walnut patina and subtle surface wear that highlights the depth of the carving and adds to its character.
