18th Century French Regence Carved Giltwood Wall Mirror with Cherub Crest
$8,900
About
Make a strong decorative statement with this exquisite French Régence antique mirror, richly carved in giltwood circa 1730. The tall, elegant frame is crowned with an elaborate pierced pediment centered by a finely sculpted cherub mask, framed within a cartouche and surrounded by scrolling acanthus, C-scrolls, and shell motifs, all set over a textured lattice ground. The composition reflects the transition from the grandeur of Louis XIV to the lighter, more fluid Régence aesthetic.
The rectangular mirror plate, likely original mercury glass, is bordered by a delicately carved inner molding with rope-twist detailing, enhancing the depth and refinement of the frame. The surround continues with high-relief foliate carvings along the sides and apron, all retaining a beautifully time-softened gilt surface with warm, aged patina.
The antique mirror is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with minor losses and wear to the gilding consistent with its early 18th century origin. The back retains old wood planks and later reinforcements, further supporting its authenticity.
A striking focal point over a commode, console, or in a grand entry, this important period mirror brings architectural presence and timeless French elegance to any interior.
