Mid-Century French Rouen Faience Heraldic Decorative Platter
$775
About
Bring vibrant color and traditional French craftsmanship to a wall, shelf, or tabletop with this elegant Rouen faience platter. Crafted in France circa 1971, the decorative ceramic tray features an ornate scalloped silhouette with pierced side handles and richly hand-painted Baroque scrollwork in deep cobalt blue, ochre, green, and burnt orange tones.
At the center, the platter is decorated with the heraldic coat of arms of Rouen, including a crowned shield with three fleurs-de-lis above the symbolic lamb, framed by delicate floral motifs and a ribbon banner inscribed “Rouen.” The lively decoration reflects the enduring influence of historic Rouen faience first produced in Normandy during the 17th and 18th centuries, celebrated for its intricate polychrome ornamentation and Italian Renaissance inspiration.
The reverse bears a hand-painted “Rouen 1971” mark and retains its hanging cord for wall display. The platter is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with rich glazed colors and beautiful decorative presence. Some restoration to one pierced handle as shown.
