19th Century French Hand-Carved Elm Dough Bowl with Handles
$875
About
This authentic antique French dough bowl was hand-carved from a single block of hardwood circa 1880 and reflects the practical craftsmanship of traditional provincial kitchens. The elongated oval vessel features thick sculpted walls and flat integral handles at each end, originally designed for mixing and kneading bread dough.
The interior retains visible adze and gouge marks from the original hand-hewn process, highlighting the bowl’s handmade construction. Over decades of use, the wood has developed a warm honey-brown patina with darker areas from repeated handling and food preparation. The exterior shows pronounced tool marks and natural irregularities that give the piece wonderful rustic texture and character.
Natural age separations, minor shrinkage lines, and scattered wear are present throughout, all consistent with age and long utilitarian use. These elements contribute to the authentic antique character and charm of the piece.
Today this antique dough bowl makes a striking decorative centerpiece on a farmhouse table, kitchen island, or console. It is ideal for displaying fruit, bread, dried botanicals, or seasonal arrangements while adding warmth and texture to French country, primitive, or rustic interiors.
In excellent antique condition commensurate with age and use.
