This substantial antique pedestal combines classical architectural form with bold sculptural decoration. Crafted in France circa 1890 in the Neoclassical Revival style, the column is made entirely of richly veined pink marble displaying soft blush, cream, rose, and pale gray tones throughout.
The cylindrical shaft is decorated with deeply carved spiral fluting that sweeps dynamically around the body, creating a strong sense of movement and allowing the natural veining of the marble to become part of the design. The column rises from a broad molded base resting on an octagonal plinth and is finished at the top with a substantial circular capital and removable round platform.
Constructed in three separate sections, the pedestal can be disassembled for easier transport and placement. The upper surface has a central drilled opening, making it especially suitable for displaying a sculpture, bust, urn, or other decorative object that may require secure mounting. Its generous proportions also make it well suited for use in an entry, gallery, conservatory, living room, or formal interior.
The marble retains an attractive polished surface and beautifully varied natural coloration. Minor chips, old filled repairs, surface marks, and expected wear are visible, particularly along the edges of the removable top, all consistent with age and use and shown in the photographs.
