Mid-Century French Louis XVI Marquetry Marble-Top Commode à l’Anglaise
$4,600
About
Elegant in form and exceptionally detailed, this antique-style French “commode à l’anglaise” was crafted circa 1940 in the Louis XVI tradition. Its graceful demi-lune case combines a central bank of four drawers with rounded open compartments on either side—the distinctive configuration associated with the commode à l’anglaise.
The three lower drawers are faced with beautifully matched veneers arranged in geometric patterns and centered by delicate floral marquetry bouquets. Above, a shallow frieze drawer is decorated with a continuous row of hand-painted porcelain floral medallions, each set within a ribbon-tied gilt-bronze surround. Coordinating ring pulls, foliate mounts, decorative banding, and bronze appliqués enrich the cabinet throughout.
A shaped white and gray veined marble top follows the curved outline of the case. Each side compartment contains two burgundy velvet-covered shelves bordered by pierced gilt-metal galleries, providing elegant display space for porcelain, silver, books, or decorative objects.
The cabinet rises on six tapered and fluted legs terminating in gilt-bronze collars and sabots. Offering both practical storage and open display space, it could serve as a commode, buffet, sideboard, or console. Its marble surface and sophisticated proportions would also make it an exceptional powder-room vanity fitted with a sink.
Excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
