Colorful and full of personality, this antique French barbotine pitcher depicts a lively duck with expressive features. Crafted in France circa 1910, the molded faience jug is realistically shaped with an open beak forming the pouring spout and an integrated handle extending along the back.

The bird is hand-painted in richly saturated shades of emerald and forest green, accented with a salmon-colored breast, bright yellow beak, and finely detailed plumage. Its animated expression and sculptural form reflect the playful animal designs for which French barbotine pottery became celebrated during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The underside bears a Saint-Clément France mark. Founded in 1758 by Jacques Chambrette near Lunéville, the Saint-Clément faience manufactory became renowned for its colorful glazed ceramics, including imaginative animal and character pitchers. Production of barbotine wares continued into the early 20th century.

The ceramic bird pitcher is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with vivid colors and a lustrous glazed finish. Both decorative and functional, it would bring whimsical French country character to a kitchen, dining room, wet bar, or collection of antique majolica.
