Early 20th Century English Silver-Plated Samovar with Lion Finial
$1,100
About
Richly ornamented and highly decorative, this antique silver-plated samovar was crafted in England circa 1900. The substantial hot-water urn features a rounded body raised on an elaborate openwork stand with four scrolling feet and a circular support beneath for the original heat source.
The polished body is finely engraved with floral and foliate motifs arranged around decorative vertical panels, while a broad relief band encircling the neck with classical figures and pastoral scenes. Two tall pierced handles flank the vessel, each embellished with scrolling ornament and turned finials. A shaped spigot with an ivory-tone handle projects from the front for dispensing hot water.
The removable lid is crowned by a particularly striking rampant lion holding a shield, adding a heraldic character to the piece. The sculptural finial, engraved decoration, and richly cast stand give the samovar impressive presence from every angle.
Originally used for serving and keeping water hot for tea service, the piece now makes a dramatic decorative accessory for a dining room, bar, buffet, or sideboard.
The antique samovar is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with expected surface wear, light scratches, and variations to the silver-plated finish.
