19th Century French Carved White Marble Mortar with Wood Pestle
$975
About
Substantial in weight and beautifully timeworn, this antique mortar and pestle set was crafted in France circa 1880. Hand-carved from solid white marble, the mortar features a deep rounded basin, gently tapering sides, and four prominent rounded lug handles arranged around the thick rim.
The marble displays warm cream and ivory tones with subtle natural veining, mineral deposits, surface abrasions, and staining developed through generations of use. The deep interior retains visible grinding wear, adding to the authentic utilitarian character of the piece. The mortar is accompanied by a large turned wood pestle with a broad rounded grinding end and shaped handle detailed with incised rings. A length of old cord remains wrapped around the end of the handle.
Originally used in a kitchen, pharmacy, or apothecary for crushing herbs, spices, and medicinal ingredients, the set now makes a striking decorative accessory. Its sculptural form and aged surfaces would add character to a kitchen counter, island, open shelf, or console, while the mortar could also be used as a rustic bowl for garlic, nuts, or small decorative objects.
The antique mortar and pestle are in excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
Dimensions: Mortar: 9.5” diameter x 4.25” H; Pestle: 10” L.
