18th Century French Normandy Pewter Litre Measures, Set of 3 with Tray
$1,300
About
This antique French pewter measuring set comprises three graduated lidded measures accompanied by a large oval serving tray. Crafted in Normandy circa 1795, the vessels are traditionally shaped with cylindrical bodies, molded bases, angular handles, and hinged lids fitted with thumbpieces.
The three measures are individually stamped according to capacity, including “LITRE,” “DEMI LITRE,” and a smaller measure, reflecting the newly introduced French metric system of the late 18th century. Each vessel also bears impressed pewter hallmarks, including a small crowned punch. The gently irregular surfaces, scattered scratches, and dents—particularly on the half-litre measure—give the group an appealing authentic patina acquired through generations of practical use.
The accompanying pewter tray has a shaped, molded border with a softly scalloped outline and provides an attractive presentation for the three graduated measures. A wonderful example of antique French utilitarian pewter, the set would make a distinctive display in a kitchen, wine cellar, bar, or collection of French country antiques. In good condition commensurate with age and use, with expected surface wear, oxidation, scratches, and dents.
