19th Century French Louis XV Giltwood Wall Mirror with Floral Crest
About
Crafted in France circa 1860, this elegant antique Louis XV wall mirror is distinguished by its richly carved giltwood frame and elaborate Rococo crest. The rectangular frame features softly shaped upper corners and is crowned by a pierced asymmetrical cartouche surrounded by scrolling acanthus leaves, carved flowers, and delicate foliate branches.
The broad molded surround is decorated throughout with finely carved floral and foliate motifs, while a beaded inner border neatly outlines the large mirror plate. The sculptural crest and flowing ornamentation give the piece the graceful movement and asymmetry characteristic of the Louis XV aesthetic.
The warm gilt finish has developed an attractive patina, with gentle rubbing, tonal variation, and minor losses that accentuate the depth of the carving. The mirror plate appears to be an older replacement, installed sometime during the life of the piece, and the wood backing has also been replaced. A later hanging wire allows for vertical display.
Generously scaled and highly decorative, this antique mirror would make a striking focal point above a fireplace mantel, console, or commode, or could be used in an entry hall, bedroom, dressing room, or powder room.
The mirror is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
Dimensions: 39″ W x 54″ H.
