19th Century French Louis XV Carved Walnut Leather Top Desk from Provence
$6,600
About
Finely carved throughout, this antique Louis XV desk combines elegant Provençal craftsmanship with a highly functional seven-drawer configuration. Crafted in France circa 1890, the walnut writing table features a shaped rectangular top inset with a black leather writing surface, finished with gilt-tooled borders and a decorative gilt motif at the center.
The serpentine front is arranged with three drawers on each side and a wider central drawer above the kneehole. Each drawer front is richly hand carved with floral garlands, ribbon bows, rosettes, and foliage, continuing the decorative vocabulary found throughout the piece. The side panels are equally elaborate, centered by carved rocaille decoration surrounded by scrolling floral motifs.
The table is raised on graceful cabriole legs embellished with carved foliage at the knees and along the feet, while carved floral details accent the vertical supports framing the drawers. The warm walnut has developed an attractive patinated finish that enhances the depth and definition of the carving.
The seven drawers provide generous storage, and the piece retains two working keys. With its finished back and decorative side panels, it may be placed freely within a room rather than only against a wall.
The antique writing table is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with appropriate wear to the leather surface.
