19th Century French Provence Glazed Terracotta Storage Pot with Lid
$375
About
Rustic and full of character, this antique French confit pot reflects the traditional utilitarian pottery of Provence. Crafted in France circa 1870, the cylindrical terracotta vessel is finished with a warm pale yellow glaze and decorated around the upper body with simple hand-painted ochre motifs. Two small applied loop handles flank the sides beneath a molded rim, while the removable domed lid is fitted with a small central knob.
Originally used in a Provençal kitchen for storing preserved foods, the pot retains a wonderfully timeworn surface with areas of glaze loss, mineral deposits, discoloration, and wear that reveal the natural terracotta beneath. The interior is glazed in a rich reddish brown, creating an attractive contrast with the exterior. Today, the antique vessel would make a charming decorative accessory in a kitchen, pantry, or country interior and could also be used as a cache pot or storage container.
The antique pottery vessel is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with expected losses and surface wear that enhance its authentic rustic appearance.
