Early 20th Century French Henriot Quimper Hand-Painted Faience Candlestick
$195
About
This colorful French faience candlestick is a classic example of Quimper pottery, celebrated for its hand-painted Breton figures and lively floral decoration. Crafted in Quimper, France circa 1920, the ceramic candlestick is signed on the underside “Henriot Quimper” and decorated throughout in the traditional palette of ochre yellow, rust orange, deep blue, green, and black.
The tall tapered stem features a hand-painted Breton woman in regional costume holding a flower, surrounded by stylized foliage. The reverse is decorated with bold floral motifs, while the wide circular base is painted with additional blossoms, leaves, and berry-like accents. Horizontal bands of color define the neck and base, and the upper candle cup is finished with alternating painted accents.
The flared base gives the candlestick a strong architectural profile, while the hand-painted surface retains the charming irregularities associated with traditional Quimper faience.
The piece shows age-related crazing and several visible hairline cracks extending through the base, as shown in the photographs. Despite these condition issues, it remains structurally intact and displays well.
