A tender scene of domestic life unfolds in this antique French genre painting inspired by Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin’s celebrated work, Le Bénédicité. Crafted in France circa 1830, the oil on board remains presented in its original giltwood frame.

The intimate composition depicts a mother serving a simple meal to two children gathered around a linen-covered table, apparently moments after saying grace. Arranged in a balanced triangular grouping, the three figures convey a sense of harmony, affection, and quiet contemplation. Soft light illuminates the mother’s caring gesture and the children’s attentive expressions, while their clothing is rendered in a warm palette of ochre, muted blue, russet, and cream.

The restrained interior, furnished with ladder-back chairs, earthenware vessels, and modest household objects, reinforces the scene’s atmosphere of sincerity and rural domestic virtue. The dark background provides a dramatic contrast, drawing the eye toward the figures and their shared moment at the table.

Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin (1699–1779), listed in the Bénézit Dictionary of Artists, was celebrated for transforming everyday subjects into poetic observations of family life. He revisited Le Bénédicité several times, and one version was presented to King Louis XV in 1740.

The painting and original giltwood frame are in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with rich colors and a warm, time-softened patina.
