18th Century French Aubusson Tapestry Depicting Louis XIII and Richelieu

this impressive antique Aubusson tapestry was woven in France circa 1780 and presents a richly detailed historical court scene framed within an architectural oak surround. The composition depicts two elaborately dressed gentlemen in 17th-century costume, traditionally identified as King Louis XIII of France and Cardinal Richelieu, accompanied by attendants in a formal garden setting.

The figures are rendered in finely woven shades of blue, crimson, ivory, and soft green, with particular attention given to the feathered hat, slashed sleeves, ruffs, stockings, and other details of period court dress. A broad decorative border of scrolling acanthus leaves, flowers, and foliage in red, cream, and gold surrounds the central scene and gives the textile exceptional visual richness.

Aubusson became one of France’s most celebrated tapestry-producing centers, renowned for sophisticated pictorial compositions and finely woven decorative borders. The present example reflects that tradition while also displaying the romantic historical taste favored in the 18th century.

The tapestry is mounted within a substantial carved oak frame with shaped upper corners and retains an old exhibition or transport label on the reverse referencing Nogent-sur-Vernisson and Paris. The antique textile is in very good condition commensurate with age and use, with expected fading, surface wear, and minor restorations consistent with its age.
