19th Century French Barnyard Oil Painting Signed H. Lambert for Galien-Laloue

$5,200

About

Full of rustic charm and pastoral character, this antique oil on canvas painting captures a peaceful scene of everyday life in the French countryside. Painted in France circa 1890, the artwork is signed in the lower left by H. Lambert, one of the lesser-known pseudonyms used by the celebrated French artist Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854–1941). The painting is presented in its 19th-century carved giltwood frame, which complements the warm colors and traditional subject matter.

The composition depicts a picturesque basse-cour, or French farmyard, with a lively gathering of chickens and roosters feeding in the grassy foreground. A magnificent rooster with golden-yellow plumage and a dark sweeping tail stands prominently among hens in shades of white, gray, brown, and black. Behind the birds, a rustic stone farmhouse with an open doorway, an old wooden cart, and climbing vegetation creates an intimate rural setting. Delicate tree branches rise against a softly illuminated sky, while the distant landscape gradually disappears into a hazy atmosphere.

The artist’s confident brushwork, subtle handling of natural light, and harmonious palette of greens, earthy browns, and muted grays bring depth and movement to the composition. Particular attention has been given to the individually rendered birds, whose varied plumage and animated poses give the scene a wonderful sense of life. The contrast between the richly detailed foreground and the atmospheric background demonstrates the artist’s skill in capturing the character and tranquility of the French countryside.

Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854–1941) was a French painter renowned for his atmospheric landscapes, rural compositions, and bustling Parisian street scenes during the Belle Époque. Although best known for his detailed depictions of Parisian boulevards, horse-drawn carriages, and fashionable city life, he was equally accomplished in portraying the peaceful landscapes and agricultural traditions of provincial France.

Throughout his career, Galien-Laloue worked under numerous pseudonyms, partly because of his contractual arrangements with art dealers. Among the names associated with his work are J. Lievin, E. Galiany, L. Dupuy, and H. Lambert. His distinctive ability to capture natural light, seasonal atmosphere, and picturesque settings made his paintings particularly desirable among collectors of French art. His work is represented in French museum collections, and the artist is listed in the Bénézit Dictionary of Artists.

We thank Mr. Noé Willer, recognized specialist in the work of Eugène Galien-Laloue, for confirming the authenticity of this painting, which is recorded in his archives of the artist.

The antique painting is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, retaining rich, realistic colors and a beautifully aged giltwood frame. A charming example of 19th-century French rural genre painting, this signed work combines artistic quality, historical interest, and the timeless appeal of a traditional barnyard scene.
