About
This exceptional antique Armoire Lyonnaise was carved in Lyon, France, circa 1760, and represents one of the most refined regional expressions of 18th-century French cabinetry. Crafted from fruitwood, the grand wardrobe stands on traditional bun feet above a straight plinth base and is crowned by an elegant double bonnet pediment. The pediment is richly carved with scrolling foliage and centered by an elaborate shell motif surmounted by a cherub in high relief, a hallmark of important Lyonnaise work and a clear indication of its original status and quality. The façade features two tall paneled doors with raised reserves, each adorned with finely hand-carved floral and foliate decoration. The carving is crisp and deeply articulated, showcasing the skill of the master carver and the sculptural quality typical of the Lyon region. Opening the doors reveals a fully intact and original interior fitted with shelving and drawers, offering generous and versatile storage. The armoire retains its original iron lock, key, and cremaillère, a rare and desirable survival that underscores its authenticity and careful preservation. The cabinet is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use and displays a deep, warm walnut-toned patina developed naturally over more than two centuries. Monumental in scale yet elegant in proportion, this museum-quality armoire makes a striking statement in a family room, library, or large bedroom. Its generous interior allows it to function equally well as refined storage or as an entertainment cabinet capable of housing a 65″ flat-screen television. Notably, the piece was formerly the property of a prominent Dallas antique dealer, adding to its distinguished provenance.
