19th C. Venetian Painted Carved Wall Crest with Polychrome and Gilt Trim
$4,600
About
Make a dramatic decorative statement with this monumental 19th-century Venetian carving. Handcrafted in Italy circa 1870, the deeply pierced wooden panel features an exuberant rocaille design centered by a stylized scallop shell, flanked by scrolling acanthus and foliate motifs in high relief. The surface is finished in distressed polychrome tones of terracotta, slate blue, and pale silver, with worn parcel-gilt accents that reveal its original opulence. Originally part of an architectural interior, possibly an overdoor, bed corona, or chapel element, this large crest now offers versatile display potential. It would make a stunning and imaginative king-size headboard, or could be mounted as a one-of-a-kind wall panel above a mantel, console, or entryway. Measuring 75.25 inches wide by 31.75 inches high and 3.25 inches deep, the carving is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use. A rare and theatrical piece that brings authentic Venetian grandeur and sculptural presence to any interior.
