19th Century English Jacobean Oak Dining Chairs with Leather, Set of 8
$7,150
About
This handsome set of eight antique dining chairs was crafted in England circa 1870 and reflects the substantial character of the Jacobean Revival. The suite includes six side chairs and two matching armchairs, all constructed of solid oak with richly carved architectural details and a warm, time-softened patina.
Each chair features a rectangular upholstered back framed by straight oak uprights terminating in carved foliate finials. The seats are broad and generously proportioned, raised on robust front legs carved with gadrooned, foliate, and geometric motifs, while simple stretchers join the legs for added strength and stability. The two armchairs are distinguished by open arms with upholstered leather pads supported on equally decorative carved uprights.
The seats, backs, and arm pads are upholstered in thick brown leather with a beautifully aged surface, showing the natural creasing, tonal variation, and patina developed through years of use. Large decorative brass nailheads secure the leather and reinforce the strong Old World character of the set.
Substantial, comfortable, and highly decorative, this complete set would work especially well around a large dining or refectory table. The chairs are in excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
