About
Bring authentic industrial character and historical charm to a kitchen, wine cellar, butcher shop, or country house interior with this antique hanging trade scale. Crafted in Birmingham, England, circa 1850, the large spring balance features a circular brass dial housed within a wrought iron frame and fitted with substantial forged iron hooks above and below for suspension and weighing.
Originally used by butchers, farmers, and merchants to weigh livestock, meat, and other goods, the instrument is calibrated up to 250 pounds and retains its original black steel pointer and engraved brass face. The dial is marked “Trade Spring Balance, W & T Avery Ltd, Birmingham,” one of England’s most respected scale manufacturers. Additional markings include “Silvester’s Patent” and the original weight graduations around the perimeter.
Today, this antique scale serves as a striking decorative object, equally suited for display in a farmhouse kitchen, restaurant, wine cellar, or industrial-inspired interior. The piece remains in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and showcases a wonderful patinated brass dial paired with richly oxidized forged iron hardware that reflects over a century of honest use.
Dimensions: 13” Diameter x 30”H.
