19th Century French Black Forest Carved Bleached Oak Hunt Buffet Desserte
$6,200
About
Bring remarkable craftsmanship and Old World character into a dining room, lodge, or grand entry with this richly carved antique French Black Forest hunt buffet desserte. Crafted in France circa 1870 from solid oak, the monumental two-piece cabinet is executed in the celebrated “Saint Hubert” hunting taste and showcases exceptionally deep hand-carved relief work throughout.
The pierced crest is crowned with an expressive carved hound dog head surrounded by scrolling grapevines, oak leaves, and foliate motifs, flanked by turned finials and elegant openwork carving. The upper display section features a wide serving shelf framed by bold scrolled supports with carved detailing and decorative molded trim.
Below, the server is fitted with two drawers across the frieze, each dressed with beautifully carved branch and grape-form pulls over paneled doors adorned with dramatic game trophy carvings depicting hanging fish and birds surrounded by wheat sheaves, grape clusters, fruit, and trailing foliage. The side stiles continue the naturalistic theme with cascading carved fruit and leaf motifs in high relief. Inside, adjustable shelving provides generous concealed storage for serving pieces, linens, or barware.
The antique hunt buffet is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a warm bleached oak patina that highlights the extraordinary depth and movement of the carvings. An impressive statement piece for a dining room, wine room, ranch house, or hunting lodge interior.
