About
Exceptional in scale, craftsmanship, and decorative detail, this antique Saint-Hubert hunt buffet is a superb example of late 19th-century French Renaissance Revival furniture. Crafted in France circa 1880, the substantial two-part cabinet is built of solid oak and lavishly ornamented with carved game animals, hunting trophies, oak foliage, scrollwork, and architectural details. The highly naturalistic treatment of the animals and woodland motifs also reveals a strong Black Forest influence, giving the piece an especially sculptural and rustic character.
The upper section is crowned by a dramatic shaped pediment centered with a projecting stag head fitted with natural antlers. Bold C-scrolls, carved oak leaves, and acorns surround the crest, reinforcing the hunting theme. Below, two open display shelves are edged with continuous carved foliate borders and supported by sculptural brackets, while the paneled backs are decorated with trailing foliage, floral motifs, and raised cartouches.
The lower buffet features a broad serving surface above a full-width dovetailed drawer carved with scrolling foliage and centered by an expressive lion mask. Additional lion masks embellish the upper corners, while the vertical stiles are enriched with deeply carved acanthus leaves and projecting boar-head trophies.
A pair of paneled cabinet doors below are carved in high relief with elaborate hunting still lifes depicting game birds, fish, foliage, and forest bounty. Intricate carved borders frame each panel and further emphasize the quality of the carving. The doors open to reveal a spacious interior fitted with a fixed shelf, offering ample storage for serving pieces, table linens, dinnerware, bottles, or barware.
Paneled sides, a heavily molded and carved plinth, and rounded bun feet complete the imposing composition. The solid oak displays a warm, richly developed patina that highlights the depth and crispness of the hand-carved ornament.
Designed originally for a dining room, this impressive antique cabinet may be used as a Saint-Hubert buffet, hunt server, vaisselier, sideboard, display cabinet, or bar cabinet. Its combination of French Renaissance Revival architecture and Black Forest-inspired naturalistic carving gives the piece unusual decorative presence and broad appeal.
The buffet is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with a documented old glue repair to the carved crest.
