About
Elevate a wine cellar, library, or entertaining space with this exceptional antique dry bar, crafted in France circa 1820. Executed in the Renaissance Revival taste, the substantial cabinet is built of solid oak and showcases an elegant bowed front with rounded ends, creating an impressive architectural silhouette. Richly hand carved throughout, the piece displays the remarkable craftsmanship and sculptural quality associated with the finest French cabinetmakers of the period.
The richly ornamented façade is centered by a striking circular medallion depicting the youthful Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and revelry, holding his thyrsus amid a naturalistic landscape. The central panel is framed by floral spandrels and flanked by beautifully carved spiral-twist pilasters adorned with standing cherubs emerging from scrolling vines. Curved end panels feature deeply carved floral and foliate bouquets in high relief, while an elaborate egg-and-dart and parcel-gilt acanthus frieze extends across the entire upper façade, adding warmth, texture, and subtle gilded accents.
The reverse is fully finished and designed for service, making the cabinet ideal as a freestanding bar or island. It features a central drawer retaining its original iron pull above an open storage compartment fitted with a shaped display shelf and a spacious lower shelf for bottles, stemware, decanters, bar accessories, or serving pieces. The gracefully curved working side offers generous legroom, allowing the cabinet to function comfortably as a bartender’s station.
The top is fitted with a custom polished tole metal counter, a later addition that follows the elegant contours of the cabinet while providing a durable, practical, and easy-to-maintain work surface for mixing cocktails and serving guests. The dark metallic finish contrasts beautifully with the warm oak tones and richly carved decoration.
Sculptural from every angle, this impressive antique dry bar combines outstanding artistry with exceptional functionality. Whether placed in a wine cellar, tasting room, executive office, game room, or sophisticated home bar, it serves as both a practical entertaining piece and a dramatic work of decorative art.
The cabinet is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use and adorns a rich, warm oak patina with beautifully preserved carved details and traces of original polychrome and parcel gilding.
