19th Century French Barbotine Centerpiece Jardinière with Young Girls
$875
About
Bring whimsical charm and color to a dining table, console, or mantel with this delightful antique French barbotine centerpiece crafted circa 1880. Executed in majolica ceramic, the sculptural jardinière features three young girls standing atop a rustic branch-form bridge, each dressed in flowing pastel garments and oversized bonnets, capturing the innocence and sweetness of childhood in remarkable detail.
The elongated basin below is designed in an organic faux-bois form with a soft celadon-glazed interior, creating a beautiful contrast against the warm earthy tones of the exterior. Each figure is individually modeled with expressive faces, curled hairstyles, and gently animated poses, giving the composition movement and personality from every angle.
Unlike many overly ornate majolica pieces, this example has a lighter and more playful aesthetic that feels fresh and highly decorative today. The scale makes it especially versatile as a centerpiece, cachepot, floral vessel, or decorative object for a kitchen island, breakfast room, or garden-inspired interior.
The antique French pottery vessel is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and retains rich hand-painted colors and glossy glaze throughout. A charming and increasingly hard-to-find example of late 19th-century French barbotine craftsmanship.
