19th Century French Louis XV Carved Arched Giltwood Wall Mirror with Leaf Decor
$5,400
About
Almost five feet tall, this important antique giltwood mirror is a one-of-a-kind decorative statement. Crafted in Paris, France circa 1870, the tall rectangular frame features an arched serpentine top, richly embellished with deeply carved molding including classic egg-and-dart and beaded trim. The crown is surmounted by a dramatic hand-carved cartouche in high relief, showcasing the refined artistry of the Louis XVI style. At its center, a pierced crest of quiver and torch, emblems of love and enlightenment, is tied with ribbon and flanked by trailing laurel swags, acanthus scrolls, and delicate floral sprays. The entire composition retains its original gold leaf finish, now softly aged to a warm, matte patina that enhances the sculptural depth. The mercury glass plate is clean and reflective with minimum dark spots, and the wooden back remains sound and stable. Measuring 40 inches wide by 59.5 inches high and 5 inches deep, this exceptional 19th-century mirror is both classically refined and richly detailed. Ideal above a mantel, enfilade, or console, it also makes a striking statement in a grand powder room, over a mantel or in a formal living room or entryway. In excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
