19th Century French Louis XV Provençal Walnut Duchesse Brisée Chaise Longue
$4,900
About
This elegant antique French walnut Duchesse Brisée (French for “broken duchess”), also known as a provincial chaise longue, was crafted in Provence, France, circa 1880. The set is composed of three separate elements: two generously proportioned armchairs, traditionally referred to as his and hers, and a matching central ottoman designed to be used jointly, allowing for versatile arrangement and comfort. Each section rests on finely shaped cabriole legs, carved at the shoulder with delicate floral motifs and joined by a scalloped apron enriched with hand-carved foliage. The rounded, gently curving backs are beautifully sculpted with floral and foliate details, reflecting the refined yet relaxed character typical of late 19th century Provençal seating. The frames retain a rich, warm walnut patina that highlights the quality of the fruitwood and the depth of the carving. The seats and backs are upholstered in their original floral and foliate patterned fabric, harmonizing softly with the walnut tones, and finished with traditional brass nailhead trim. The chairs are fitted with loose seat cushions, offering both comfort and practicality while preserving their authentic antique presentation. This Duchesse Brisée is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with well-preserved carving, strong structure, and an inviting presence that makes it ideal for a bedroom, salon, or refined sitting area. Dimensions: Overall length 72 inches, depth 28 inches, height 34.75 inches. Seat height 15.5 inches.
