19th Century, French Napoleon III Hand Painted Wall Clock with “Églomisé” Glass

$2,400

About

This antique “fixe sous verre” (or églomisé glass) wall clock was created in France, circa 1850. This clock features a painted pastoral scene with boat and village. The true collector’s item in excellent condition with a rich patinated finish, and the clock mechanism has been checked and cleaned. Key and pendulum included. “églomisé” glass is a French term referring to the process of applying both a design and gilding onto the rear face of glass to produce a mirror finish. The technique of back-painting glass actually dates back to pre-Roman eras, but the name is derived from the 18th century French decorator and art-dealer Jean-Baptiste Glomy (1711–1786), who was responsible for its revival. Measures: 22″ W x 7″ D x 20″ H.
