19th Century French Patinated Bronze Woman and Cherub Sculpture Signed M. Moreau

$3,600

About

This elegant allegorical figure composition was crafted in France circa 1880; built of bronze, the statue stands on a circular black marble base, and depicts a female beauty seated on a trunk with a winged angel by her side. The tall composition features Fine details, and is signed on the base by the artist, M’n Moreau with partly effaced foundry stamp. The large sculpture is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with a nice patinated bronze finish. Mathurin Moreau (1822-1912), was a French sculptor in the academic style. Moreau was born in Dijon, first exhibited in the 1848 Salon, and finally received a medal of honor from the Salon in 1897. He was made mayor of the 19th arrondissement of Paris, and in 1912 had a street named in his honor. His father was the sculptor Jean-Baptiste-Louis-Joseph Moreau and his siblings included sculptors Hippolyte and Auguste Moreau. He died in Paris in 1912. Listed in the Benezit. Measure: 22.25” H.
