This antique grain measure was crafted in France circa 1870. Originally used for measuring grain and other dry goods, the cylindrical vessel is constructed of wood reinforced with hand-forged iron bands, vertical straps, and riveted nails, reflecting the practical craftsmanship of 19th-century French agricultural tools.

The rustic container features a warm, honey-brown wood patina beautifully contrasted by the dark, aged iron fittings. The underside is reinforced with six radial iron straps converging at a central circular plate, providing strength and durability. Inside, an original iron crossbar spans the opening, allowing the vessel to be lifted and handled with ease. The front retains its original stamped inscription, “DOUBLE DÉCALITRE,” indicating a capacity of 20 liters, a traditional metric measurement used for grain and other agricultural commodities.

Both functional and decorative, this antique French grain measure would make a wonderful waste basket in a study or powder room, a rustic kitchen accessory, or a distinctive addition to a French country interior.

The antique grain measure is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, retaining a rich wood patina and beautifully aged ironwork.
