19th Century French Louis XV Carved Walnut Armchair with Black Leather
$2,100
About
This handsome antique armchair was crafted in southern France circa 1880 and reflects the sculptural elegance of the Louis XV tradition. Built of richly patinated walnut, the generously proportioned fauteuil features a tall, gently arched upholstered back above a wide and deep seat, giving the chair a substantial and comfortable presence.
The shaped frame is raised on four cabriole legs ending in carved escargot feet. Acanthus leaves decorate the knees, while the deeply scalloped apron is carved on all four sides with scrolling foliage, shell motifs, and pierced-looking rocaille ornament. The open arms curve gracefully outward and are supported by carved uprights enriched with additional leaf and cross-hatched details.
The chair has been newly upholstered in smooth black leather, creating a striking contrast with the warm walnut frame. Traditional brass nailhead trim follows the contours of the seat and back, emphasizing the serpentine silhouette and hand-carved construction.
With its unusually tall back, generous scale, and strong Provençal character, this antique fauteuil would work particularly well as a desk chair, fireside chair, or statement seat in a library or study. The armchair is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with a rich walnut patina throughout.
